<p>What exactly is the Atkins Diet? Well in 1972 Dr Robert C Atkins introduced his Diet Revolution to the masses as a low carbohydrate, high protein, and high fat diet. It went against the ideas of much of the medical community but Dr Atkins hadn’t just dreamt up the diet. He based his finding on years of research with his patients following low carb diets.</p>
<p>If we go way back in time what did our ancestors eat? When humans first evolved on the planet what was there for them to eat? Certainly no fast food outlets with their 24/7 drive through or vast supermarkets filled with every kind of food known.</p>
<p>We were hunter-gatherers. Basically we ate what we hunted and gathered. Large mammals would be hunted, killed and eaten along with berries, nuts and some edible herbs. As we had evolved over millennia to be nourished by what was available to eat so our bodies had adapted to handle the foodstuffs of the time.</p>
<p>Our bodies are adapting still to try and get the best nourishment out of today’s diet but this adaptation is a slow, slow process. We were not designed to eat refined carbohydrates or sugars. Our salt intake was never meant to be as high as it is. We are basically omnivorous and were made to eat meat and vegetables. This is the diet from which we find it easiest to gain nourishment. This is close to the Atkins Diet.</p>
<p>Dr Atkins found that his patient’s health improved following his diet. Could it simply be that a return to the diet it was designed for is the best for the human body?</p>
<p>People have a right to choose to be vegetarian or to consume vast quantities of fast food but do they then have the right to complain that they don’t feel well? If we design a road car and then try and take it off road should we be surprised that it gets stuff after a while?</p>
<p>The Atkins Diet works that much is known and as to long term problems well its has been around since 1972, how much longer does it require to be tested for before the medical profession accept it?</p>
<p>South Beach Diet – a phrase that is commonly heard but is seldom understood. This is just another truth behind the emergence of another diet. So what’s the big deal?</p>
<p>Well, the South Beach Diet is considered as the “biggest thing” that the slimming world has ever introduced. But where exactly did the South Beach Diet come from? Here is the answer: the South Beach Diet was actually formulated by a person named Dr. Arthur Agatston after the realization that some of his patients were having little success by using conventional low carb – high fat diet plans like the Atkins diet which is also popular around the globe.</p>
<p>Dr. Arthur Agatston, being a cardiologist and knowing the condition of his patients, had the main concern of finding a diet that will promote a perfectly healthy heart. Finding no such source for that diet existed, he decided to formulate his own diet plan and that was to become known as the South Beach Diet.</p>
<p>According to the testimony of Dr. Agatston, since the introduction of the South Beach Diet, many people who followed the diet actually lost an average of 13.6 pounds almost double the 7.5 pounds lost by those who use the strict “Step II” of the American Heart Association (AHA) diet. Along with that, it was also found that when following the South Beach Diet many people showed greater decreases in their waist-to-hip ration and triglycerides, and their good to bad cholesterol ratio improved even more.</p>
<p>Generally, the South Beach Diet, in a word, is not considered as a low carbohydrate diet as it is commonly associated. It is a fact that the idea behind the South Beach Diet is to lose weight in a way that is healthy for those who follow it.</p>
<p>The South Beach Diet, unlike the low carbohydrate diets usually encourages the dieter to choose between the good and the bad carb foods. As such, the dieter is required to eat more fruits and vegetables and even wholegrain bread in contrast to other low carb diets. So, in the South Beach Diet, there is more of a sense of “yin and yang”, that it is more balanced than any other low carb diets in the whole world.</div>

<p>We have become such an instant society, with drive-thru windows, remote controls, and instant access communications including computers and cell phones, we now unrealistically expect instant results for every thing. Fad diets appeal to people because they promise quick and easy weight loss. These get-slim-quick schemes stand to make millions of dollars by keeping people confused and convincing them effective weight management is complex. The dieting fad industry takes advantage of people wanting to look and feel better, and who are willing to try anything if it helps them lose weight.</p>
<p>These dieting myths became popular because many of them work for a short period of time. When someone stops eating certain types of food or eats &#8220;special&#8221; combinations of foods, resulting in fewer calories being consumed, initially weight can be lost. Unfortunately, most of this weight lost is from water and lean muscle, not body fat. Understandably, most people can&#8217;t keep up with the demands of a diet strictly limiting their food choices or requiring them to eat the same foods over and over again, as with the nineties low-fat craze and the current low-carbohydrate craze.</p>
<p>Regrettably, people who use fad diets usually end up gaining back any weight lost and, many times, gain even more weight. Furthermore, recent research indicates this repeated &#8220;yo-yo&#8221; dieting may actually reduce one&#8217;s life span. Many people will still prefer quick fix fad diets and pills instead of making long-term changes in their eating and exercising habits.</p>
<p>Currently there are very few controls or regulations informing and protecting the dieting consumer from these rip-offs. Without health risks being disclosed, weight loss &#8220;success&#8221; is vaguely defined using short-term results, and weight loss &#8220;failure&#8221; is always the consumer&#8217;s fault. The few regulations existing are rarely, or, at most, loosely enforced. Suffice to say: buyers beware.</p>

<li>Offering testimonials from clients or &#8220;experts&#8221; in weight loss, science, or nutrition. Remember these people are probably being paid to advertise the diet plan or product.</li>
<li>Drawing simple conclusions from complex medical research.</li>
<li>Limiting your food choices and not encouraging you about balanced nutrition by eating a variety of foods.</li>
<li>Requiring you to spend a lot of money on things like seminars, pills, or prepackaged meals in order for their plan to work.</li>

Liberal MP Bronwyn Bishop wants to see adoption, rather than fostering, used to separate children from parents who are battling addiction. Excuse me, but has the honorable member completely forgotten about successful drug rehab programs?</p>
<p>Ms. Bishop, who is currently chairing an Australian parliamentary inquiry into the impact of illicit drug use on families, told the Australian Broadcasting Company&#8217;s Four Corners program that the current system is skewed towards the interests of drug-using parents, and not their children. She said there are hundreds of parents who are desperate to adopt children and give them love and good homes, but “there is this ‘biology first’ principle.”</p>
<p>By ignoring that successful drug rehab can keep a family together, and tossing “this biology first principle” on the trash heap, Ms. Bishop nullifies both the proven breakthroughs in the science of drug rehab, as well as one of the most primal urges of human history and experience – the urge for one’s own biological parents, and children.</p>
<p>Ms. Bishop’s detractors have been quick to speak up. Brisbane Youth Service spokeswoman Amanda Davies said there is no evidence that all people that use drugs are unable to parent their children. And Queensland Council of Social Service president Karyn Walsh said there is strong evidence that forced removals cause children long-term harm. “You can&#8217;t just go removing children simply because their parents have a drug addiction,” she said. “Children need to know their parents, and not all parents who have a drug addiction are bad parents, or incapable of parenting.”</p>
<p>Victorian Child Safety Commissioner Bernie Geary put it best when he said, “There is nothing in my experience worse than a child who’s sentenced to be without their parents for the rest of their lives. Children are better off with families in the long run.”</p>
<p>And let’s not forget the ultimate solution: if the parents do a successful drug rehab program that gets down to the bottom of why they’re taking drugs and resolves those issues, they won’t be addicts.</div>

I always thought that there was one that I could rely on and use to make me stop smoking. You see, smoking is incredibly difficult to quit until you have found your own solution, i.e. the best smoking tip ever for you. Then it becomes easy to stop smoking.</p>
<p>So what is the best stop smoking tip ever then I hear you say. Well, the bad news for you is that I don&#8217;t know. It&#8217;s not that I don&#8217;t know a whole heap of stop smoking tips, it&#8217;s just that I don&#8217;t know which is the best stop smoking tip for you personally.</p>
<p>Let me clarify. When I stopped smoking, one thing that really changed things for me was the realisation that I could actually enjoy life without cigarettes. For me that was the best quit smoking tip ever, but it wasn&#8217;t the only one and on its own it wasn&#8217;t that powerful. There were a whole raft of things I had to understand before I could happily give up the smokes. Now this is a strange analogy but stick with me. It is a bit like the Whitehouse, 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue, Washington DC.</p>
<p>The Whitehouse is a magnificent building, but it is a magnificent building because it appears to be greater than the sum of its parts. Its parts add up to &#8216;x&#8217; but the whole thing put together is worth &#8216;x&#8217; plus a whole lot more.</p>
<p>The Whitehouse wouldn&#8217;t look very good with just the huge entrance and no building. The building itself wouldn&#8217;t look very impressive without that portico. The lamp under the portico wouldn&#8217;t look good without the portico and the portico wouldn&#8217;t look as good without the lamp. The gardens wouldn&#8217;t be set off as well as they are without the house and the house wouldn&#8217;t look as magnificent if it didn&#8217;t have the gardens.</p>
<p>Do you see what I mean? One thing in itself may not be that impressive but when contrasted or complimented with something else or a number of other things, it becomes greater than it really is. It is always possible for something to be greater than the sum of its parts.</p>
<p>You can read them and others all over the internet, but they tend to follow different ideas about smoking and how you can overcome its grip on your life. If you read stop smoking tips all day long you could quite easily get no nearer finding a simple way to quit smoking without the anguish and stress and normal need for willpower.</p>
<p>So if you are really keen to stop smoking, I suppose the best stop smoking tip I can give you is this. You are killing yourself. You know that but it doesn&#8217;t make it any easier to stop smoking. You need to find a solution, so keep looking. They do exist but it may be different for you than it was for me. Lots of people succeed with cognitive behavioural therapy, others with hypnotherapy and others with drugs, although I take a pretty dim view on drugs to help you quit!</p>
<p>For me, it was cognitive behavioural therapy. That sounds serious and scary but it&#8217;s not. It is a set of instructions to change the way you think about your relationship with cigarettes. Once I understood why I smoked, it was really easy for me to quit. As they say in the military, &#8220;know your enemy!&#8221;</p>
<p>My final piece of advice that I suppose is the other &#8216;best stop smoking tip&#8217; that I can think of is always, never stop trying to quit smoking.</div>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<div id="body">Even though I have quit smoking in the last few months, the majority of the time I feel as though I have never smoked at all. But then there have been occasions that the urge to smoke has been overwhelming. When I told my oldest daughter that I quit smoking, she asked &#8220;Did you quit smoking to save money or for your health?&#8221; &#8220;Both,&#8221; was my answer. I now have financial gains and health benefits since quitting smoking.</p>
<p>The cigarettes I had been buying cost about $2.75 per pack. I have calculated that in 28 days, I will have saved $127.70. In a few months, I can save enough money to have some work done to the brakes on my car or get some new tires. A new computer looks pretty good after five or six months. I can even contribute some of my savings to a 401k plan and health and life insurance at work. In addition to the financial benefits of quitting smoking are the immediate improvements in my overall health.</p>
<p>Within a few weeks of no longer smoking cigarettes, I noticed that I don&#8217;t get as out of breath as quickly as I used to. I also don&#8217;t have that cigarette smoke taste and smell at the back of my nose and throat any longer. My clothes and hair even smell better. As a matter of fact, the fragrances of my shampoo and laundry detergent are really nice and fresh. Since my nose is not filled with the nasty, stinky cigarette smoke, I can barely tolerate the odor of cigarette smoke on other people or a room that is filled with smokers. I know, now, what it must have been like for my friends and family (the majority of whom are non-smokers) to put up with the smell of the walking ashtray that had my name on it. Along with these improvements are ones that are long lasting.</p>
<p>According to the American Cancer Society, even though I quit smoking only a few months ago, my lung function has already increased by up to 30%. In one to two years, my risk of having coronary heart disease will have decreased by up to half of what it would have been if I had continued smoking. The probability of contracting other lung diseases such as COPD, asthma, and emphysema will also decrease. Five years from now, chances of early death for me will have decreased by up to 50% and in fifteen years it will be as if I had never smoked..</p>
<p>Before I quit smoking cigarettes, I had done so for about 35 years. In the last few short months, I have seen and smelled the benefits of quitting: I have a little bit more money in my pocket and I no longer stink like a nasty ash tray. My life expectancy will also increase as time goes on and that is a long term benefit I can definitely live with.</div>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<div id="body">The national institutes of health sponsored the diet heart feasibility study to determine if it was possible to lower the blood cholesterol levels of Americans eating at home by changing the kind and amount of fat in their diet. About 1000 men aged 45 to 54 in five cities, all healthy volunteers, were assigned to one of three diets. Diets 1 and 2 were low in cholesterol and saturated fats but high in polyunsaturated fats; that is, they had a higher ratio of polyunsaturated to saturated fats, or P/S ratio. Diet 2 differed from diet 1 in that it contained more polyunsaturated fat and monounsaturated fat. The control diet (diet 3) was similar to a typical American diet, that is, high in cholesterol, total fat, and saturated fat but with low P/S ratio.</p>
<p>The men picked up all their food at special distribution centers. The food containers did not list the ingredients, and neither the participants nor the doctors who conducted the study knew who was assigned to which diet. This research design, called &#8220;double blind&#8221; is designed to reduce unintentional bias on the part of either the study subjects or the medical scientists, since neither knows who is in what program until the end of the study.</p>
<p>After one year on the assigned diets, the blood cholesterol levels fell between 11% &#038; 12% in the men on diets 1 and 2. The average cholesterol level in the group on the typical American diet fell only 3%.</p>
<p>The next question was &#8221; Will lowering blood cholesterol by diet in healthy Americans decrease the rate of coronary heart disease?&#8221; There were several problems in trying to answer this question. First, the symptoms of coronary heart disease usually take four or more decades to manifest themselves. Second, although coronary heart disease is the major cause of death and disability in this country, the actual rate of new cases per year in middle aged people is relatively low, about five to ten new cases per 1000 middle aged male adults. Third, what control group might such a study use?</p>
<p>Ideally, neither the participants nor the staff conducting the study should know which participants are in the treatment group and which are in the untreated control group. Diets that are high or low in animal fat and cholesterol are clearly different, and unless unlabeled foods were given out at a commissary, everyone would realize whether he was assigned to a diet low or high in cholesterol and saturated fat. Because 100,000 men were needed for a definitive diet heart study, it was not feasible to have a blind control group of the necessary size.</p>
<p>Because of these difficulties and a prospective price tag of about one billion dollars, another approach was taken. First, only patients with very high blood cholesterol levels were selected; second, a drug treatment was chosen that lowers the blood cholesterol level to a greater extent than diet alone. This approach reduces the number of participants needed to a manageable level. A drug trial can replace a diet trial, provided that the drug has a specific effect on lowering blood cholesterol (and LDL cholesterol). This permits a direct test of the hypothesis that a decrease in the blood cholesterol level reduces coronary heart disease. Further, a drug trial allows medical scientists to develop a suitable inactive medication or placebo that will not lower the blood cholesterol level, thus permitting the study to be double blind.</p>
<p>About 4,000 healthy middle aged men with high levels of blood total and LDL cholesterol were assigned to either a treatment group, which received an active medication called cholestyramine, or to a control group that received placebo. Cholestyramine was known to produce a significant decrease (10 to 20 percent) in the level of total and LDL cholesterol in the blood. Both the treatment and control groups were put on the same diet. Neither the participants nor the medical staff knew to which of the two groups a participant was assigned. Cholesterol levels were checked every other month. After one year the results of the study were as follows:</p>
<p>Man from group that took active drug: his cholesterol level at the beginning of the trial was 281, and at the end was 199. Man from group that was on placebo starting cholesterol level was 273, and at the end was 274. The men taking the cholestyramine had significantly greater decrease in there blood cholesterol than the men taking placebo. Therefore it is known that you can reduce the risk of coronary heart disease.</div>
