Tips for Parents of Teenagers Struggling With Acne

Being the parent of a teenager is tough, and I can relate. Unfortunately, there are so many issues that our teens are faced with. There are drugs, sex, bullying, peer pressure and acne. There is a lot of information out there about acne, its causes and its prevention and cure. But while we are trying to get all of the right information we need to be aware that this is a very embarrassing and frustrating problem for our teenagers. I am not a parenting expert, but there are some common sense things that we can do to help our kids though this hard time.

One of the first things we need to do is understand how big this is for teens. We know and understand that teenage acne will not last forever and we understand that it is more important who they are as person. But for our teens, it is everything. They want to be accepted by their peers and one of the ways that teens feel acknowledged is when they look good. We cannot sweep this desire, under the rug, we have to understand it and take them very seriously. Let them know that you understand how important it is for them to look good and that you will help them find a way to get their acne under control.

After you have pledged your help, get busying researching. Find out what acne is and how it can be treated. There are several myths out there concerning acne and its causes and treatments. Make sure that your teenager does not get the wrong information and make things worse. It may even mean that you make an appointment with your doctor to discuss your options and even a possible visit to a dermatologist. Whatever, it takes show your teenager that you are concerned about them.

A third tip that I would offer parents with teens and acne is to encourage them to get involved in things that they enjoy doing. You may also, try getting them concerned about a community project that would help them change their focus from themselves to others. It is always great for parents to participate. The second benefit to this is that you will be spending some time with your teenager, and that is something that seems to happen less and less as they get older.

Even though being the parent of a teenager is hard, it is rewarding. Kids of every age just need to know that what is important to them is important to you. Be there for them, but the one thing they do not enjoy, very much, are the “when I was a kid stories”, it might be a good idea to stay away from those, for now.

As a parent of teenagers, I have seen the struggles that teens go through. Since acne is the number one skin condition in the United States, it is important for parents to be aware of how much this skin conditions negatively effects their teenagers. http://rlitton.wordpress.com
